It is universally agreed that satellite navigation units are all-around great gadgets. They get us where we need to go without the hassle of stopping to read and memorise the route on the out-of-date A to Z that’s been in your glove compartment for the last 10 years.
But sat navs can do much more than help you find your nearest petrol station. In fact, when used properly, they can be a tool to help you travel around the world in the most efficient, or scenic way possible, it really is up to you.
Here at Cobra Electronics, we always want our customers to discover how gadgets and devices can improve your journey, which is why we’ve put together this quick and easy guide to getting the most out of your sat nav.
1. Update your software
Think of your sat nav like an app on your iPhone or Android device. If you don’t update it regularly, you’re going to miss out on cool new features that everybody else is using.
Most reputable sat nav brands will regularly release new updates for your unit. Updates can provide you with new and updated maps, additional maps for different countries and software updates that will keep your device running as smooth as possible. So, the next time your sat nav prompts you for an update, don’t ignore it.
2. Carefully plan your route
When planning a lengthy trip in unknown territory, you may be tempted to input a postcode just before you set off, and while this may get you to your destination via the quickest possible route, it might not be the best one for you.
When planning your travels, take into account the roads you want to use, where you want to take your comfort breaks and food breaks, and any scenic places you want to visit to keep your journey interesting. Your sat nav will have all the information you need to plan your perfect route, so make sure you spend those extra few minutes on planning a comfortable journey.
3. Take note of warnings
During any breaks on your route, be sure to regularly re-check the route that you have planned for any traffic, accident, weather or roadworks warnings. Once these have been brought to your attention, your sat nav will suggest a quicker route for you, making your journey quicker and easier.
4. Use voice activation
As handy as sat navs are in our everyday driving, they do have the potential to momentarily take drivers attention away from the road. To avoid any hairy situations, ensure that you have the volume of your device turned up to hear the navigation instructions and use voice activation so the device can hear your instructions too. This way, your hands can stay on the wheel and your eyes on the road, reducing your chance of an accident or breaking the law.
